Psychoanalytic Perspectives on Virtual Intimacy and Communication in Film brings together a group of psychoanalysts to explore, through film, the new forms of communication, mainly the internet, that enter more and more frequently the affective life of people, their intimacy and even the analytic room. The contributors, all practising psychoanalysts, analyse the potential surprising transformation the human relationships are going across, including psychoanalysis. At present, it is difficult to value the future importance and predict the possible disquieting consequences of the use and abuse of the new technologies; we run the risk of finding ourselves unprepared to face this revolutionary transformation in human connections and affects. Will it be possible in a near future that human beings prefer to fall in love with a machine gifted with a persuasive voice instead of a psychoanalyst "in person"? The contributors explore the idea that in short, virtual intimacy could begin to replace real-life, in sentimental and psychoanalytic relationships. Imagination and fantasy may be strengthened and may ultimately prevail over the body, excluding it entirely. Can the voice of the analyst, sometimes transmitted only by telephone or computer, produce a good enough analytic process as if it were in-person, or will it help to foster a process of idealization and progressive alienation from real-life and connection with other human beings? The film Her (2013), alongside others, offers a wonderful script to discuss this matter, because of the deep and thoughtful examination of love and relationships in the contemporary world that it provides. Psychoanalytic Perspectives on Virtual Intimacy and Communication in Film will be of great interest to all psychoanalysts and psychoanalytic psychotherapists interested in the ongoing impact of technology upon human relationships.

Andrea Sabbadini, CPsychol, is a Fellow of the British Psychoanalytical Society and its Director of Publications. He works in private practice in London, is a Senior Lecturer at UCL, a trustee of the Freud Museum, the director of the European Psychoanalytic Film Festival, and the chairman of a programme of films and discussions at the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA). He is also the founder editor of Psychoanalysis and History and the Film Section editor of The International Journal of Psychoanalysis. He has edited books on time, on paranoia and on cinema, and is the author of Moving Images (Routledge), forthcoming in 2014.

Ilany Kogan is a training analyst at the Israel Psychoanalytic Society. She functioned as Clinical Supervisor at the Department of Children and Adolescents, Eppendorf University Hospital, Hamburg, Germany, and of candidates and members of MAP, Munich, Germany and Aachen, Germany, Supervisor of the Psychotherapy Centre for the Child and Adolescent, Bucharest, Romania, Teacher and supervisor at the IPA Psychoanalytic Group, Istanbul, Turkey. She has also worked as a supervisor in various places in Germany, especially in Munich and Aachen, where she continues to this day, and at the Generatia Centre in Bucharest, Romania, and the IPA Study Group, Istanbul, Turkey. For many years, she worked with Holocaust survivors' offspring, and published extensively on this topic. She was awarded the Elise M. Hayman Award for the study of the Holocaust and Genocide, and is the author of The Cry of Mute Children, Escape from Selfhood and The Struggle Against Mourning. She received the Sigourney Award, honouring achievements for the advancement of psychoanalysis in 2016.
Paola Golinelli is a Training and Supervising Analyst of the SPI (International Psychoanalytic Society) and works in private practice in Bologna. She is a member of the IPA in Culture Committee.
