The knotted subject: Hysteria and its discontents

The author of this study reinvestigates medical writings and cultural performance to develop a new concept of hysteria which challenges traditional gender-based theories that link it to dissatisfied feminine sexual desire. She turns instead to traumatic causes, particularly the fear of violation.
