Philosophy and the maternal body

Drawing examples from Plato, Marx, Freud and Klein, the author shows how the maternal body has played a crucial but often overlooked role in shaping ideas at the heart of Western philosophy. She also draws on more recent work from the likes of Irigaray and Kristeva, clearly showing how key thinkers have combined philosophy and psychoanalysis to develop profound insights into the significance of the maternal body.
