This text examines the sensation of shame. It uses clinical cases - as well as literary and philosophical insights - to explore how shame is related to narcissistic conflicts, masochism, and exhibitionism. It integrates shame into the framework of both impulse and object-relations theories.

Nothing in the field on this subject can hold a candle to the thoroughness with which Dr. Wurmser covers it in this opus. I have used this for my own analysis as well as in my private practice with the most success. After 10 years or more it is more meaningful today than ever.
