Wilde and Jane Ryan (Chair) CPD Credits: 4 hours Includes a recording of the event with access for a year (14 days post the event) With the current proliferation of autism diagnoses, it is becoming increasingly important for psychotherapists to deepen our understanding of the relational needs of people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) who come to therapy for help with their lives. Earlier this year we hosted a conference on understanding the emotional world of severely autistic people. Now we are extending this enquiry into the therapeutic needs of sophisticated and highly adaptive autistic people, whose autism is concealed by their abilities. The seminar offers a nuanced understanding of how such people experience themselves, others and the therapeutic relationship. Across four presentations, we will consider how to recognise that someone is ‘on the spectrum’, understand seemingly puzzling behaviour, create greater safety in therapy, and develop effective ways of communicating so that a meaningful connection can be sustained. |
