Drawing from Knowing What Psychoanalysts Do and Doing What Psychoanalysts Know, David Tuckett examines what psychoanalysts are actually doing in the consulting room. Based on international clinical research and the discussion of sixteen analytic cases, he proposes a framework for clarifying how analysts infer unconscious meaning, what data they rely upon—including subjective and countertransferential experience—and how differing conceptions of transference shape intervention.

Using the metaphors of cinema, dramatic monologue, theater, and immersive theater, Tuckett articulates contrasting approaches to the analytic situation. He addresses technical controversies including the role of free association, ambivalence and aggression in session, trauma and failures of symbolization, and the possibility of being experienced as a “new object.” Through lectures, clinical discussion, and group affective learning, participants will examine their own analytic intentions and assess more explicitly what they believe they are doing in each session.
