Group analytic therapy was developed at a complex time in European history by psychoanalysts who had lived experience of that complexity; especially the interaction between the individual and the social systems in which they lived, worked and related.
This study day will explore how that complexity manifests itself in the clinical work, with a focus on:(a) influence of settings on group process and (b) the impact on the therapists facilitating those groups.
In this day long workshop, the presenters will discuss two different kinds of group therapy, each with differing kinds of complexity. The first group will explore the complexity of working with groups where all members live with severe personality pathology. The second group will explore the complexity of working with people who have committed acts of fatal violence when mentally unwell and now detained in secure care. Each group will include discussion of theoretical aspects of their work, clinical material and the impact of systemic factors and their own emotional responses to the work. The supervisor of both groups will also act as discussant.
