Event:'Being One's Self'
Venue:Online
Date:20/01/2024
Duration:4 - 5.30pm GMT / 11am - 12.30pm EST
Extra Info:Sharon Numa will join in conversation with John Steiner and Ron Britton and a panel of senior Kleinian colleagues for a webinar exploring the many psychoanalytic questions around the topic of how we form a sense of identity . This is a fertile, underexplored area, which is at the core of having a stable sense of oneself. This webinar will look at how an individual’s identity can feel deeply insecure or frail, and how lack of a sense of self can leave the psyche entangled in pathological organisations and defences.
The backdrop to the event will be the recently published book, On On Being One's Self: Clinical Explorations in Identity from John Steiner's Workshop, edited by Sharon Numa, which explores the complex dimensions of the self and the development of identity. A richly thought-provoking collection of papers by members of John Steiner's long-running workshop, the book examines how identity can be consolidated in the analytic process.

The book will be introduced by Anne Patterson, editor of the New Library of Psychoanalysis Series, which published this book.
The event will be chaired by Susan Lawrence.
