The online therapeutic relationship that was imposed upon us by the pandemic during 2020, is increasingly becoming mainstream and online therapy is now the new normal.

Loss is the principal theme of Bowlby’s work that is always defended against, but which needs to be mourned and accepted. In this presentation I will discuss the loss brought about, what is gained and what is lost by our disembodied disappearance into the digital world.

I will demonstrate my work with a client with complex trauma, who, in the early days of the pandemic, was enabled by the possibility of online therapy. It is unlikely that she would have previously sought out in-person therapy, since for her, being in close proximity felt too terrifying and unsafe. The physical proximity that was lost through digital closeness at first was what helped overcome her terror of body proximity. Slowly the client recognised that her body’s dissociation was her survival adaptation to unbearable abuse and how the online life added a protective layer to her fear of coming closer, furthermore to a sense of becoming real.
