Extra Info:‘I am Me’ with Mike Brearley

What is it to become oneself, to captain oneself? Mike will suggest that the process is analogous to captaining a team. Just as teams have identities, characteristic ongoing qualities, so too each individual is a kind of team, with different voices, different selves within. Each of us is a sort of parliament, as Ian McEwan puts it in his novel, ‘Solar’. We aim to give house-room to these self-aspects, including to our ‘shadows’ (as Jung
describes). In his talk Mike will refer to his new book, ‘Turning over the Pebbles – A Life in Cricket and in the Mind’.

Mike Brearley OBE is a retired first-class cricketer and former lecturer of philosophy at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. He served as President of the British Psychoanalytical Society 2008-10 and now devotes his time working as a psychoanalyst and a writer. In 2020 he wrote ‘Spirit of Cricket: Reflections on Play and Life’ and his new book ‘Turning over the Pebbles – A Life in Cricket and in the Mind’ (Constable, an imprint of Little, Brown) is published in June 2023.

Signed copies of Mike’s new book will be available to purchase at the Essex Church
on 8 June.
