Desmond King trained as a Clinical Psychologist at the Tavistock Clinic when Dr John Bowlby was developing his ideas on the central importance of ‘Attachment’ teaching a module on Ethology. Dr John Padel who taught PsychoanalyticTheory, was an equally inspirational influence as teacher and supervisor, as was a subsequent a period of psychotherapy with Dr David Malan.

After training Desmond worked in one of the first Psychiatric Units in a District General Hospital in Kent where he had the good fortune to play a role in the contribution psychologists made to the transformation from the custodial care of asylums distant from the communities they served.

He later trained as a Group Analyst enjoying a long and fruitful group analysis with Lionel Kreeger and until very recently supervision with Mrs Liesel Hearst. Since his retirement from full time NHS work he has enjoyed a close association with IAN and Dr Tirril Harris in particular.

He has found himself increasingly preoccupied with the profound and far reaching effects of ‘internalized neglect’ which not surprisingly mostly passes unnoticed and ignored. He will draw on ideas from Fairbairn & Winnicott as well as Melvyn Glasser. The clinical core of his presentation will explore the impact of empathic failure on relationships with both oneself and others, using Attachment Theory as a framework to help to reconnect with the experience of absence and disconnection.
