| Extra Info | : | This talk will illustrate, through clinical examples, the emergence of the capacity for symbolic thought. It will interest all who encounter images in their work with clients, whether these are transient, such as dreams and visualisations, or take physical form in art objects or poetry. Like transference, these set the psyche in motion and, within the analytic relationship, can activate new forms of lived experience for the patient. Active imagination, in the Jungian lexicon, is understood to transform unconscious psychological states. It is often applied unquestioningly in relation to all art forms so we will consider: When is imagination truly active? And how is this different from Freud's free association method? It is hoped to generate lively discussion. Professor Joy Schaverien PhD is a Professional Member of the Society of Analytical Psychology in London and a Training Therapist and Supervisor for the British Association of Psychotherapists (Jungian Section). Visiting Professor at the Northern Programme for Art Psychotherapy at Leeds Metropolitan University, she teaches internationally.
