Extra Info:John Woods on: 'Seeing and Being Seen: the psychodynamics of pornography through the lens of Winnicott’s thought'

The harm being done to children by unregulated pornography on the internet is becoming a matter of public concern not simply because of morality but because of the threat to psychological health. Winnicott’s conception of healthy development helps us see what is being destroyed by the perverse and sadistic imagery that can become compulsive to vulnerable young people. His view of the wider social picture encourages us to speak out about this form of child abuse.

John Woods is a Consultant Psychotherapist at the Portman Clinic London, where he works with both adults and young people. He is a Member of the Association of Child Psychotherapists, the Institute of Group Analysis, and the British Psychotherapy Foundation. He is the author of several clinical papers, Boys Who Have Abused; psychoanalytic psychotherapy with young victims/perpetrators of sexual abuse. (Jessica Kingsley Publishers 2003.), and has co-edited with Andrew Williams Forensic Group Psychotherapy; the Portman Approach. He has also written plays on aspects of psychotherapy, including The End of Abuse, and Compromise, both published by Open Gate Press.
