He is professor of Philosophy & Mental Health in the University of Warwick Medical School; a Fellow of St Cross College, Oxford; Co-director of the Institute for Philosophy, Diversity and Mental Health, in the University of Central Lancashire; and Special Advisor for Values-Based Practice in the Department of Health in London. He is Founder Editor of the international journal, Philosophy, Psychiatry and Psychology, and of the OUP book series, International Perspectives in Philosophy and Psychiatry.

Abstract:
This seminar, which will be built around a case study (the story of "Simon") , will show how recent developments in the new interdisciplinary field of philosophy and mental health are supporting positive ways of working with values as well as science in all areas of mental health. These initiatives include two programmes on which Bill has been leading for the Department of Health: 1) the development of training materials to support implementation of the new Mental Health Act (which covers the use of compulsion in psychiatry), and 2) a consultation on best practice in person-centred assessment in mental health and social care.
