Transference interpretations are considered to be one of the central tools of psychoanalytic psychotherapy. However, they often present a challenge to the therapist and the patient, who can find them particularly anxiety provoking. Four transcribed sessions of short-term psychoanalytic psychotherapy with adolescents have been analysed with Conversation Analysis. The results show how therapists formulate their interpretations, and how therapists and patients negotiate their verbal interaction when these are delivered. In particular those interpretations that are tackling the significance of the end of the therapy and its implication in the transference are thought about.

Elena Della Rosa trained as a child and adolescent psychoanalytic psychotherapist at the Tavistock Centre in London. Since qualifying in 2013, she has been working in the NHS with adolescents who self-harm. She recently joined the Centre for Psychoanalytic Studies at the University of Essex, where she is lecturing on MA Psychodynamic Counselling, TCTO and BA Therapeutic Care. She is currently completing a professional doctorate on the use of transference interpretation in short-term psychotherapy with adolescents suffering from depression.

This event is open to the general public.
