In psychotherapy we think a great deal about interpersonal dynamics. But how are we to really understand the boundaries between self and other? What is the relationship between our knowledge of ourselves, our knowledge of others, and the knowledge others have of us? Is mindedness primarily individual or relational? And how can our approaches to these questions benefit from an understanding of pathology - of what happens when one person is opaque to another, or when boundaries between self and other get drawn in the wrong place, or not at all? These lines of questioning have a significant presence both in philosophy and in psychotherapy. But the two inquiries rarely have the opportunity to make contact with each other. This intensive one-day conference brings together prominent theoreticians from both disciplines to explore these and related questions, and to open up an interdisciplinary dialogue about the many-faceted relations between self and other and their pathologies. |
