I have not read for many a day such a clear, vivid and yet realistic evocation of what analytic therapy of any sort is about. If a literate ordinary person asks me for a book that will tell them what analysis is about, I tell them to read Freud's Introductory Lectures. I would now say to read McDougall, at least her case studies, and then read the Introductory Lectures.'
