This volume presents a selected series of papers by Leo Rangell. A giant of psychoanalysis over the course of six decades, Rangell sought to unify the old and the new, while resolving apparent contradictions at every level. In this volume, we wish to share with the reader a special glimpse of Leo Rangell’s contributions. We present a series of Rangell’s papers, selected by Leo himself, along with thoughtful commentaries by contributors familiar with his work. Each commentary deals with the significance of the article, in relation to some of the major themes of Rangell’s work, and in relation to contemporary clinical and theoretical issues within psychoanalysis.

Reviews and Endorsements

Choosing from the vast enduring contributions to psychoanalysis of Dr. Leo Rangell, The Rangell Reader provides an outstanding collection of papers. The reader will engage Rangell's lucid and insightful clinical, technical, and theoretical formulations. His critical exploration and integration of the developments in the last six decades of psychoanalysis are invaluable. In his prominent leadership positions he was ever concerned about distortion and fragmentation of psychoanalytic theory, and its appropriate applications. Rangell was nevertheless open to developmental transformation within an expanding array of new propositions. He welcomed gradual theoretical innovation and potential unification based upon compelling evidence in the crucible of clinical work and convergent interdisciplinary research. These papers are paired with perceptive review and elaboration by distinguished psychoanalysts. Readers will be rewarded and stimulated in their own choices and decisions among complementary as well as competing psychoanalytic ideas.
