This evidence-based book promotes good practice in the prevention and management of violence in patients with mental disorder and will be of practical use to a wide range of mental health professionals working in in-patient, prison or community settings. It begins with an overview of the legislation relevant to the management of violence, covers risk assessment and appraises new evidence, then examines the use of medication and electro-convulsive therapy (ECT), plus non-pharmacological management techniques. Safeguarding, post incident briefing, clinical governance, plus liaison with the police, Crown prosecution service and MAPPA (Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements) are also covered. Individual chapters focus on the management of the risk of violence in different settings, such as the community and in prisons, and for different specialist groups, such as for older adults and for those with intellectual disability.
