Meeting Dennis Duncan is part of the Encounters Through Generations video series in which senior psychoanalysts from the British Institute of Psychoanalysis talk about their lives and work to analysts and candidates in training. The series is a living testimony to the richness of knowledge and experience of analysts trained in the British tradition.
About the Author(s)
Dennis Duncan was born in Northern Ireland in 1934. He was educated at Portadown College, Armagh, and Trinity College, Dublin, qualifying in Medicine in 1960 and in Psychiatry in 1964. He worked first in general psychiatry, both in Dublin and in London, and then moved to more specialist posts in psychoanalytically informed psychiatry at the Cassel Hospital and the Hampstead Clinic (now the Anna Freud Centre). During this period, he trained as a Psychoanalyst at the British Institute of Psychoanalysis and soon went into full time private practice. He has for many years been a Training and Supervising Analyst. Clinical work has been central to the development of his analytic thinking and writing but he has also explored the specific ways in which theories of the human sciences are employed in psychoanalysis. Now semi-retired, he lives and works in North London.
