Filial therapy trains parents to act as therapeutic agents with their own children, and is based on the precept that parents often have more emotional significance to a child than a therapist could ever hope to create and therefore their assistance allows for more constructive therapeutic gains. To help therapists train parents in filial therapy, Landreth first introduced his ten-step model in a previous book, Play Therapy: The Art of the Relationship. This book begins with a survey of the historical and theoretical development of the filial therapy approach, before presenting an overview of its training. The following ten chapters each represent a detailed guide to the ten sessions envisioned in the model. The book includes other helpful resources such as a transcript of an actual parent-child play session, and answers to common questions raised by parents, children, and therapists. The second edition of Play Therapy has become something of a classic text in the field, and is required reading in most play therapy courses in the United States and abroad. The ten session model has since been extensively researched and reported in the field, and this book has been eagerly anticipated and long-awaited.
