Bodylistening is an accessible and engaging introduction to the wide-ranging field of body psychotherapy, which encompasses healing and therapeutic approaches that aim to treat the mind, body and spirit as a unified whole. In Bodylistening, Tim Brown covers underlying theory and historical background to provide context to the origins of this growth area of therapeutic practice. He outlines what can happen in the therapy space between two people with an interest in exploring embodiment. The emphasis is on face-to-face therapeutic encounter and the text includes the sort of words and phrases which might arise between client and therapist in a session. Also woven into the book are stories of the author’s own encounters with embodiment and therapy, plus examples from the world of the other-than-human.
After outlining the basics of body psychotherapy, the author introduces the bodylistening approach that he practices before moving on to explore the specifics of breath, movement, touch, character, trauma and embodiment. The book features suggestions for personal inquiry, which invite the reader to pause and deepen into their own experience. As somatic practice lends itself well to groupwork, a selection of workshop experimental ideas are offered. Each chapter ends with a list of suggestions for further reading, which are some of the author’s favourite resources. Finally, endnotes provide details of original sources and other background material.
Reviews and Endorsements
Considering the long-standing gulf that has existed between the "talking therapies" and the diverse multitude of body-oriented modalities across the field of therapeutic work, this book does a great job of offering an accessible, balanced and comprehensive overview. It should be required reading on all kinds of counselling and therapy training courses that do not include these approaches in their curriculum. This book is like talking to a knowledgeable friend: Tim has managed to find a style that is friendly and readable, giving a personal introduction that points towards the substance, depth and potential of body-oriented psychotherapy, without making the subject overly complex nor glossing over some of its problems and shadow aspects as a tradition.'
Michael Soth, Embodied-relational psychotherapist, supervisor, trainer and consultant
Tim Brown is absolutely right when he says, "The mind and language tend to dominate the world of psychotherapy. The body is often overlooked and has a lot to contribute". This book takes a highly informative look into the nature of just that and it’s very enlightening. Well written and constructed with clear diagrams, excellent practical examples to explore breath, movement, touch, character, trauma and more, this is a fine new contribution to the field. Its guides to further reading at the end of each chapter are particularly informative and a testament to how well read the author is, in this complex and fascinating field of practice. If you are interested in body psychotherapy and 'bodylistening' in particular, then I highly recommend it whether beginner or experienced practitioner alike.'
Dr Richard Coaten, Dance Movement Psychotherapist, Author and Churchill Fellow 2010, ADMP(UK) delegate to European Association of Dance Movement Therapy (EADMT), and Board Member Balbir Singh Dance Company and Creative Dementia Arts Network (CDAN)
Bodylistening is very similar to Tim: it’s playful and serious, gentle yet thorough, and it manages to do something magical in a humble way — it takes complex subjects and makes them aesthetic, accessible, and inviting. Writing about complicated concepts with such clarity, while keeping the body alive and active, this book is a must-read for anyone interested in body psychotherapy and bodywork — professionals and clients alike.'
Asaf Rolef Ben-Shahar, PhD, author of Touching the Relational Edge and Speaking of Bodies
Bodylistening is a clear, thorough, balanced and precise introduction to Tim Brown’s approach to body psychotherapy. I found it profoundly humane, demystifying what is sometimes complex theory and practice, and kindly inviting readers to begin to engage through story, personal enquiry, workshop experiments and further reading. It’s a quietly visionary book, which I will be recommending to trainees, clients and supervisees.'
Emma Palmer, author, relational body psychotherapist, supervisor and facilitator
