As a past user of mental health services and someone who is currently in training as a psychodynamic psychotherapist, I can thoroughly recommend this book. I found the content relevant to current clinical practice, in that it is empowering, collaborative and analytic. I enjoyed the openness expressed by the author and am reminded of Ferenzis words "however we treat our patients, they treat themselves with transference". I do think patients have the ability to pick up our unconscious processes and that being honest in our responses, in my experience, enhances, rather than detracts from the process of therapy as it facilitates the development of trust and a strong working alliance. Whilst there are schools of therapy that would disagree with such a stance, I have not found them as useful as those that blend analysis with humanity!
