This selection is deceptively easy to miss, but I would highly recommend it for those interested and intrigued by Lacanian thinking and practice. Tightly and crisply edited by Astrid Gessert, who provided an insightful chapter of her own on hysteria and obsession, the book gives a very useful overview of key themes in Lacan.

From a personal and professional perspective, it reminded me of my experience being a participant in the late 1990s of CFAR’s introductory programme. At the time ideas formed in my mind that looking back have proved illuminating and influential. I have read much by and on Lacan, and use his insights to inform my work.

I also remember Astrid’s pivotal role in holding the group and gently facilitating and guiding us. That ease of manner, combined with a deep understanding of her field, shines through this book.
