Another great book from Holmes! Somehow he manages to cut through all the jargon that surrounds psychoanalytic writings and be crystal clear. The book centres around the concept of mentalising which is a concept I have been struggling with for ages, but in Holmes' hands begins to make sense. He then produces a magnificent defense of psychoanalysis as a valid form of therapy in our CBT-dominated world, and applies his ideas to the kinds of clients one meets in the consulting room -- people with sexual difficulties, borderline personalities and the suicidal. Oh, and lots of good illustrations from literature and film too , something I particularly respond to.
