This book is a contribution to the problem of how best to approach emotional distress as it presents in primary care. The chapters contain conversations noted down during the author's year as a family doctor, to which he has now added commentaries from his contemporary psychoanalytic point of view. As the balance of opionion begins to shift towards conversational and psychological methods of approach to these problems, a model of the mind - as distinct from the brain - is needed, and the psychoanalytical model described here is one that has evolved in a line of development from Freud through Melanie Klein to the post-Kleinian model of Bion and Meltzer.
