Murder can occur concretely when it has been committed many times previously in daydreams, nightmares and unconscious phantasy. Before the deed, conscious and unconscious efforts are designed and devoted to keeping the murder encapsulation from action. Then internally something breaks loose the murderousness from its cordoned off status, and all the energies of the individual become devoted to enacting the murderous deed. The function of the analytic process is to follow the chains of associations as manifested and enacted in the transference and construct the narrative of their history.

Ronald Doctor

Ronald Doctor is a Consultant Psychiatrist in Psychotherapy at the West London Mental Health NHS Trust, a member of the British Psychoanalytical Society and Chair of its NHS Liaison Committee. He is Chair of the Association for Psychoanalytical Psychotherapy in the NHS (APP) and Hon. Clinical Lecturer, Imperial College, London. He has edited two books: Dangerous Patients: A Psychodynamic Approach to Risk Assessment and Management, Karnac, (2003) and Murder; A Psychotherapeutic Investigation, Karnac, (2008)
