Extra Info:We will all be familiar with the painful and inevitable moments of misattunement between a psychotherapist and patient as a central part of the therapeutic process. The issue of interpersonal rupture that is the product of an unconscious, intersubjective field is a highly theorised aspect of relational psychotherapy. But what about interactions that seem beyond repair, and may even lead to an early and abrupt ending to a therapy? What sense can we make of words that seem to have wounded or even harmed the patient despite our years of training, skill and best intentions? This day addresses the issue of 'therapy failure', asking both how we get to a place of offering a bad intervention (the put-down, the lecture, the dismissive shrug) and how to work back from an apparent failure. What should we do next when we have made a regrettable comment or taken an unhelpful stance? Is there really such a thing as a failed therapy? How are the therapist's inevitable limitations to be theoretically accounted for?
