Extra Info | : | Attachment thinking has transformed psychotherapy. Can it also be useful in thinking about wider issues, such as how to create a more relational society?
There is a growing interest in ‘wellbeing’, mindfulness and the quality of relationships. However, these worthwhile initiatives - like personal psychotherapy - seem to exist in a different space from the dominant values of neoliberalism. How can we begin to make visible the connections between individual development and the economic and political frameworks within which we live? Can we use our understanding of human development and the processes of attachment to develop a more coherent narrative about our public social relationships?
Sue Gerhardt is an attachment based psychoanalytic psychotherapist in private practice. She was the co-founder of the Oxford Parent Infant Project (OXPIP) and worked for many years with parents and babies. During this period she also researched and published the best-selling Why Love Matters: how affection shapes a baby’s brain. In 2014, an d version of this book will be published. She is also the author of The Selfish Society (2010) and is currently working with a group of colleagues to develop ideas about social change from an attachment perspective.
